What is dry ice blasting?

Dry ice blasting is similar to sandblasting, but instead of sand grains, CO2 ice pellets at -78.5 °C are used. These are sprayed onto the contaminated surface using air pressure, causing the dirt to come loose.

This cleaning method is based on three principles:

  • Kinetic energy: The dry ice pellets are accelerated by compressed air and collide with the surface. This kinetic energy causes the dirt to come loose.
  • Thermoshock: The temperature difference between the extremely cold dry ice (-78.5 °C) and the surface causes rapid cooling and expansion of the dirt, causing it to detach.
  • Sublimation: The dry ice pellets sublimate upon contact with the surface. This means that they transition directly from a solid to a gaseous state without becoming liquid. This prevents moisture problems.
