What is dry ice blasting?
Dry ice blasting is similar to sandblasting, but instead of sand grains, CO2 ice pellets at -78.5 °C are used. These are sprayed onto the contaminated surface using air pressure, causing the dirt to come loose.
This cleaning method is based on three principles:
- Kinetic energy: The dry ice pellets are accelerated by compressed air and collide with the surface. This kinetic energy causes the dirt to come loose.
- Thermoshock: The temperature difference between the extremely cold dry ice (-78.5 °C) and the surface causes rapid cooling and expansion of the dirt, causing it to detach.
- Sublimation: The dry ice pellets sublimate upon contact with the surface. This means that they transition directly from a solid to a gaseous state without becoming liquid. This prevents moisture problems.
The advantages
- Environmentally friendly, as no chemical cleaning agents are required
- Dry ice blasting is suitable for electrical appliances
- It is often faster than other cleaning methods.
- Can be used on various surfaces
- Thanks to the bactericidal effect of CO2, bacterial growth is greatly reduced.
- Dry ice cleaning is non-abrasive and does not have an aggressive effect on the surface being cleaned.
Applications
Dry ice blasting has various applications. It is mainly used in industry (cleaning machines, production lines, moulds, etc.) and the food sector (cleaning food processing equipment).
We also perform dry ice cleaning in the construction, energy, textile and monument conservation sectors.
